Know the Business

New managers often forget to link team goals directly to a strategic business objective. They then struggle, looking for projects or traction that will seem "productive" without linking their effort to larger objectives outlined in strategy or planning documents. Many kinds of goals are found in strategy documents. Each can be translated into a team objective that makes it easy for the manager, team, and peers to see progress and to understand how the team supports the larger business. The sections in this chapter explains how to link team goals to organizational strategy to gain the benefits and avoid the risks listed above.
